Chumley releases have dropped!

“Ride With Us!” and “Suite: Baby Chumley” are out on many popular platforms!

Chumley is a collaboration that began as an experiment many years ago. Josh, Shooz & JCulby, connecting via a flyer on a record store wall, were all from very different backgrounds. Regardless of this, they looked to see if they could meld their divergent music experiences into something. The result of this experiment was an 18 minute piece that was ultimately cut into 4 “songs” for a “demo”. Shortly thereafter, Josh relocated away from the area and the recordings were essentially shelved. One of the few copies of the full work was given to friend and longtime WLFR radio DJ Paul Glaser, who’d played portions of it regularly over many years during his weekly radio program.

Very sadly, Paul passed away in 2022. A celebration of his life was organized by his friends with live music to be included in the tribute. If there was ever a reason for Chumley to play live again, Paul was it. So, Josh flew to SNJ from the west coast and Chumley reunited to perform for the first time in many years. The energy from Paul’s celebration was so positive that fresh material, coupled with an interest in actually making it available to the public became a Chumley destination and ”Ride With Us!” became the vehicle.

Over half the tracks on “Ride With Us!” were originally conceived during lockdown via internet tools. The reality of long distance music creation offered a new path to music collaboration. While certainly not ideal, it seemed revolutionary in some ways. And somewhat liberating as well. There was no pressure and no expectations. The goal was simply to try and enjoy the ability to share musical ideas in a new and different way. These tracks all went where they went when they went there. Technology was being used in an attempt to organically create something. Along the way, Jake Temple came into the project for some delicious flute and sax flavors. His contributions further validated the idea that, with some fairly basic equipment and know-how, very diverse sonic textures can readily be whipped into a frothy treat!

And while they were rolling again, they thought: why not actually release the original, almost forgotten Chumley material?

Now titled “Suite: Baby Chumley”, the entire 18 minutes, including separate cuts of the four basic “songs”, was dropped into the wild for good measure! Chumley thanks KevPK for his help on the original demo and dedicate this work to their original fan and supporter, Paul Glaser!
